Caring for Dermatitis in Fall & Winter Season

Caring for Dermatitis in Fall & Winter

Cold air outside, dry heat inside, and constant hand-washing can team up to make dermatitis flare. Here’s a gentle, practical guide to keep your skin calm, comfy, and moisturized through the colder months.

Why It Flares Now

💛 Low humidity = faster water loss. Your skin barrier dries out and gets leaky.
💛 Hot showers + heaters. They strip natural lipids that keep skin flexible.
💛 Woolly layers & fragrance candles. Irritating fibers and airborne scents can trigger sensitivity.

Your AM Routine (5 minutes)

💛 Lukewarm cleanse (or skip). Splash with cool-to-lukewarm water; use a creamy, low-foam cleanser only where needed.
💛 Soothe while damp. Apply a water-based serum or lotion with aloe, panthenol, or oat extract.
💛 Seal with buttered moisture. Use a rich, non-greasy butter/cream (shea, mango, avocado + lightweight oils). Press—don’t rub—onto damp skin.
💛 SPF still matters. UV and wind both stress the barrier; choose a gentle, fragrance-free mineral SPF for face and hands.

Your PM Routine (5–7 minutes)

💛 Cleanse gently. Creamy cleanser or micellar water; avoid strong acids.
💛 Targeted calm. Spot-treat itchy patches with colloidal oatmeal or zinc-based balms.
💛 Lock it in. Apply a thicker cream or body butter; finish rough spots with an occlusive layer (squalane, petrolatum, or a ceramide balm).

Shower & Bath Tips

💛 Keep it warm—not hot—and short (5–8 min).
💛 Use mild, low-fragrance cleansers. Avoid sulfates and heavy essential oils on compromised areas.
💛 Pat dry. Leave a little water on skin, then moisturize within 60 seconds (“soak & seal”).

Ingredients Your Skin Loves

💛 Barrier fats: shea, mango, cupuaçu, avocado, jojoba, camellia, hemp seed.
💛 Soothers: panthenol (B5), aloe, colloidal oatmeal, allantoin, bisabolol.
💛 Humectants: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, propanediol (balanced with oils to prevent TEWL).
💛 Rebuilders: ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids.
💛 Patch-test gentle fragrance only (or go unscented) on dermatitis-prone areas.

Things to Limit (Especially on Flare Patches)

💛 Hot water, daily scrubs, and loofahs.
💛 Strong acids/retinoids on active dermatitis.
💛 Lanolin or heavy essential oils if you’re sensitive to them.
💛 Rough fabrics (unlined wool); choose soft cotton/silk layers under sweaters.

Hands, Body & Scalp Care

💛 Hands: Wash with lukewarm water, blot dry, apply cream, then a balm. Wear cotton gloves under rubber gloves for chores.
💛 Body: Moisturize morning and night; reapply to elbows, knees, and shins midday if tight.
💛 Scalp: Use a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo; if flaky/itchy, rotate with a zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole shampoo (follow label directions) and condition lengths only.

Home & Lifestyle Tweaks

💛 Humidifier to ~40–50% RH. Bedroom first. Clean weekly.
💛 Shower filter if water is very hard; pat dry and moisturize immediately.
💛 Laundry: Free-and-clear detergent, extra rinse cycle; avoid fabric softener sheets on irritated areas.
💛 Wardrobe: Breathable base layers; remove damp clothes quickly after workouts or snow days.
💛 Stress & sleep. Both impact flares—short walks, stretches, and earlier wind-downs help.

Flare Plan (Have This Ready)

💛 3-day intensive moisturize: apply cream/butter 3–4× daily on damp skin.
💛 Cool compresses 5–10 minutes for itch, then seal with balm.
💛 Over-the-counter hydrocortisone (face: 0.5–1% and short term only) if your clinician has okayed it.
💛 Stop new actives/fragrance until calm returns.

If you see signs of infection (yellow crust, warmth, pain, spreading redness) or symptoms don’t improve in a week, contact a clinician.

Travel & Holiday Survival

💛 Pack minis: gentle cleanser, rich cream/butter, balm, cotton gloves.
💛 Airplane skin: apply balm to knuckles, lips, and any hotspot before boarding.
💛 Fragrance-filled rooms: moisturize before exposure; step outside for fresh air breaks.

Kid-Friendly Notes

💛 Short, lukewarm baths; blot dry and moisturize immediately.
💛 Soft pajamas and sheets; avoid wool.
💛 Stickers > wool sweaters: avoid scratchy textures on flexural areas.

A Simple Weekly Framework

💛 Daily: AM/PM moisturize; SPF on exposed skin.
💛 2–3×/week: Lukewarm baths with colloidal oatmeal; re-seal after.
💛 Weekly: Wash humidifier; quick closet check for irritating fabrics.
💛 As needed: Flare plan for itchy patches.

A Note from Me

Dermatitis thrives on inconsistency. Small, steady habits—lukewarm water, quick sealing moisture, soft fabrics—make the biggest difference. If you love a little luxury, keep it skin-smart: choose gentle textures, light scent (or none) on sensitive areas, and always patch-test.

If you want a starting point, our Butterè Skin butters are built on a barrier-first base (shea + mango + avocado + lightweight oils) with soothing allies like aloe, panthenol, and colloidal oatmeal—plush, not greasy, and kind to cool-weather skin.

Stay soft this season. 💛
